Dr Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Trinity College, Ireland in 1985. He was the foundation scholar of the College and was the recipient of the MacCarthy Gold Medal in the final medical year examination of the College in 1985. 

Dr Tan completed his specialty training in Internal Medicine under the Dublin Hospitals’ Training Scheme and received his Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s membership in 1987 and his Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom’s membership in 1988.

Dr Tan did his Intervention Cardiology fellowship program at Scripps Clinic, La Jollla, California, with world renowned Intervention Cardiologists Dr Paul Teirstein and Dr Richard Schatz as his mentors. He was awarded clinical fellowship in Interventional Cardiology by Scripps Clinic in 1997. In 1998, he was formally accredited by the Specialist Accreditation Board of Singapore as a Cardiologist.

Dr Tan was appointed as the Head of the Department of Cardiology at Changi General Hospital from 1999 to 2003. He started his private practice in Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Mount Alvernia Medical Centre in 2004.
